In an interview featured in PC Gamer Magazine Issue 405 (reported by Games Radar on February 10, 2025), director Junya Ishizaki revealed that Elden Ring Nightreign's map will dynamically generate volcanoes, forests, and swamps.

Expect the classic Soulslike challenges: navigate treacherous poison swamps and other environmental hazards, forcing you to adapt your strategies on the fly. Ishizaki explained the map will feature "large-scale changes to terrain in the form of procedurally appearing volcanoes, swamps, or forests," creating a constantly evolving landscape.

This design choice stems from the developers' vision: "to make the map itself a giant dungeon, so players have the chance to traverse and explore a different way every time they play." Forests, for example, offer cover for both players and enemies, adding a layer of strategic depth to exploration.

"Once you've chosen your strategy against a boss, the map's layout might influence your approach. We wanted to give players that agency, that choice—'I need a poison weapon this time to face this boss.'"

Familiar terrains from previous titles may return, such as the debilitating Swamp of Aeonia and Lake of Rot, known for slowing players and inflicting the Rot debuff. These procedurally generated areas might also introduce unique enemy encounters, featuring Giant Lobsters or Crabs, fearsome Runebears, Magma Wyrms, and other formidable foes from the Souls universe.
