The creator of Balatro did not expect such a grand success for his game

LocalThunk, the solo developer behind the indie sensation Balatro, saw their 2024 release become an unexpected phenomenon, selling over 5 million copies and shaking up the gaming industry. The game's success culminated in multiple awards at The Game Awards 2024, a feat neither the creator nor players anticipated.

Initially, LocalThunk modestly projected review scores in the 6-7 range, given the game's unconventional design. However, a glowing 91 from PC Gamer, followed by similarly positive reviews, propelled Balatro to a remarkable 90 on Metacritic and OpenCritic. This surprised even the developer, who admitted to a self-assessment of only 8 points.

Publisher Playstack's proactive press engagement played a role, but the game's explosive sales were primarily driven by word-of-mouth marketing. This organic growth exceeded initial projections by a factor of 10 to 20. The first 24 hours on Steam alone saw 119,000 copies sold—an experience LocalThunk described as surreal.

The overwhelming success of Balatro has left the creator unable to offer a definitive formula for other indie developers to replicate this achievement.
