Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a hallmark of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.

While the messaging system has been a key element of player interaction and engagement in previous titles, contributing significantly to the community experience, its omission in Nightreign aims to create a more streamlined and intense gameplay loop.

Preserving Asynchronous Features

Despite the removal of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players even more information about how other players perished and allowing them to loot fallen enemies.

A "Compressed" RPG Experience

The absence of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a more focused, intense, and multiplayer-driven experience than its predecessor. The game's three-day structure also contributes to this goal of a "compressed RPG" with minimal downtime and high variety.

Release Date

Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, targeting a 2025 release. A more precise release window is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
