Killzone Composer: Fans Seeking More Casual, Quicker Games?

by Logan Apr 17,2025

The iconic Killzone franchise from Sony has been on hiatus for a significant period, and now, Killzone composer Joris de Man has voiced his support for its revival. In a recent interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man shared his thoughts on the potential return of the series.

"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man remarked. "I think it's tricky because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."

The format of Killzone's potential return remains an open question. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more appealing to fans than a brand-new entry, citing the evolving tastes of gamers.

"I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," de Man said. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."

Killzone games are known for their slower, more deliberate pace and heavier feel compared to fast-paced shooters like Call of Duty. Killzone 2 specifically drew criticism for its perceived input lag, which affected its responsiveness on the PlayStation 3. The series is also characterized by its dark, gritty, and oppressive atmosphere.

In a separate interview with the Washington Post, it appeared that Guerrilla, the Sony-owned studio behind Killzone, has shifted its focus to the Horizon series. Despite this, it's been over a decade since the release of Killzone: Shadow Fall, and the prospect of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains appealing to some fans. While the future of Killzone is uncertain, supporters can take comfort in knowing that they have allies like Joris de Man rooting for its return.
