'I Know It's Not What Everybody Else Is Doing' — Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Will Keep on Putting PlayStation and Nintendo Logos in Microsoft Showcases

by Harper Feb 26,2025

Microsoft's evolving multiplatform strategy is evident in its recent Xbox showcases, which now prominently feature rival platforms like PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox. This shift, a departure from the June 2024 showcase where PS5 appearances were limited or absent, reflects a broader company initiative to reach a wider audience. For instance, the January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct showcased titles like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, all explicitly highlighting PS5 availability alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass.

This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's approaches. Their showcases, like the recent State of Play, generally omit mention of competing platforms, even for multiplatform titles. Games like Monster Hunter Wilds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance were solely presented as PlayStation releases, despite also being available on other platforms. This highlights Sony's continued focus on solidifying its console as the central point of interest for its games.

In an interview with XboxEra, Phil Spencer explained this shift as a commitment to transparency and honesty about game availability. He stated that the previous omission of PS5 logos in the June 2024 showcase was due to logistical constraints in acquiring all necessary assets. Spencer emphasized the importance of prioritizing games and making them accessible across various platforms, acknowledging that certain limitations exist on closed platforms compared to open ones.

He reiterated Microsoft's dedication to supporting its native platform while simultaneously expanding game reach. While acknowledging that this strategy differs from competitors, Spencer believes that focusing on game accessibility benefits both players and the industry.

This new approach suggests future Xbox showcases will likely include PS5 and potentially Nintendo Switch 2 logos alongside Xbox. Therefore, Microsoft's anticipated June 2025 showcase might feature titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty, all showcasing PS5 compatibility. However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this level of cross-platform promotion in their own showcases.
