The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

HBO's adaptation of *The Last of Us Part II* will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need to undergo a physical transformation to match the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over replicating specific game mechanics. The game required distinct physicality for Ellie and Abby to differentiate gameplay, but the show's focus on narrative allows for a different approach.

Druckmann notes that finding an actress as talented as Dever was crucial. The game's mechanics emphasized Abby's brute strength, while the show emphasizes the emotional depth of her character. While action remains present, the narrative focus shifts the emphasis from moment-to-moment violence to broader dramatic arcs.

Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin adds that this adaptation presents an opportunity to explore a more physically vulnerable Abby whose inner strength is even more compelling. The show will explore the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature.

The show's creators plan to adapt *Part II* over multiple seasons, unlike Season 1's adaptation of the first game. Season 2 will conclude with a natural breakpoint after seven episodes, hinting at future seasons. The extensive narrative of *Part II* necessitates this multi-season approach.

The divisive nature of Abby's character in the game has led to online harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey. This online abuse, which even extended to threats against Bailey's family, prompted HBO to provide additional security for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, emphasizes that Abby is a fictional character and not deserving of such vitriol.
