Khmer Traditional Board Game

One of the cherished traditional board games in Cambodia is Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ), a variant of chess deeply rooted in Khmer culture. The name "Ouk" is derived from the sound produced when a chess piece checks the opponent's king on the board. In the game, "Ouk" signifies a check, and it is customary for the player to announce it vocally when they check the enemy's King.

The term "Chaktrang" comes from the Sanskrit word "Chaturanga" (चतुरङ्ग), reflecting its Indian origins. Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is a two-player game. However, a unique aspect in Cambodia is that it often involves two teams of players, which adds to the excitement and social engagement of the game. It's common to see Cambodian men gathering at local barbershops or men's cafes in their towns and villages to enjoy this game.

The primary objective of Chaktrang, like chess, is to checkmate the opponent's King. The decision on who moves first is typically settled by mutual agreement among the players. In subsequent games, the privilege of the first move is usually granted to the loser of the previous game. If a game ends in a draw, the players again decide by mutual agreement who will move first in the next match.

Another traditional Cambodian board game is Rek, which you can learn more about in the section on the Rek game.
