Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Unveils 7 Major Surprises

by Gabriella Apr 19,2025

New video game hardware announcements can often follow predictable patterns. With each new console generation, we anticipate improvements such as enhanced graphics, quicker load times, and fresh iterations of iconic franchises, like those featuring our favorite plumber battling turtles.

Nintendo has consistently delivered these advancements across various console generations, from the innovative analog controller of the N64, the compact GameCube discs, the motion-sensing Wii, the tablet functionality of the Wii U, to the groundbreaking portability of the original Switch. Now, with the Switch 2, Nintendo continues this tradition of refinement and innovation.

However, true to its nature, Nintendo surprised everyone during the Switch 2 Direct with some unexpected announcements.

It's 2025 and We Finally Get Online Play

My love for Nintendo started back in 1983 when I was just four years old. My babysitter used to roll footballs at me, mimicking Donkey Kong's barrel-throwing antics. I'd leap over them, mimicking the game's sound effects, and then smash them with a toy hammer, just like Mario. With such deep-rooted fandom, it's impossible not to express a mix of excitement and long-held frustrations when discussing these new developments.

Nintendo has historically struggled with online multiplayer, lagging behind the seamless experiences offered by Sony and Xbox. Even the original Switch required a separate app for voice chat. But the tide is turning with the introduction of GameChat for the Switch 2. This feature supports four-player communication with noise suppression, video calls, and the ability to share screens across consoles, allowing you to monitor multiple game displays simultaneously. Additionally, GameChat offers text-to-voice and voice-to-text options, enhancing accessibility for all players.

While we await details on a unified matchmaking system, GameChat marks a significant step forward, potentially signaling the end of the cumbersome friend code system.

Miyazaki is Bringing New Blood Exclusively to Nintendo

The trailer for The Duskbloods initially fooled me into thinking it was a sequel to Bloodborne. The distinctive atmosphere, character designs, and settings were unmistakable hallmarks of FROM Software, led by the enigmatic Hidetaka Miyazaki. Eric Van Allen at IGN confirmed that The Duskbloods is indeed a new multiplayer PvPvE title exclusive to Nintendo.

How Miyazaki finds the time to create such masterpieces remains a mystery, but fans can expect nothing less than excellence from this legendary game designer.

A Surprise to Be Sure, But a Welcome One

In another unexpected move, Masahiro Sakurai, the mastermind behind Super Smash Bros., has shifted his focus to a new Kirby game. This is a delightful surprise, especially considering the lukewarm reception of the original Kirby's Air Ride on the GameCube. Given Sakurai's passion for Kirby and his track record, this new project promises to be a refined and enjoyable experience.

Control Issues

The announcement of the Pro Controller 2 might have seemed minor, but it's a significant upgrade. It now includes an audio jack and two additional mappable buttons, features that, though overdue, are warmly welcomed by gamers who appreciate customization.

No Mario?!

The absence of a new Mario game was a genuine shock. It appears the team behind Super Mario Odyssey has been busy crafting Donkey Kong Bananza, a new 3D platformer focusing on destructible environments. Nintendo's decision to spotlight Donkey Kong over Mario for the Switch 2 launch is a bold move, banking on the loyalty of hardcore fans to drive sales.

The Switch 2 will also launch with strong third-party support and Mario Kart World. While Mario Kart World appears to be a system-seller, its release outside the traditional holiday window suggests Nintendo's confidence in its popular party game and Donkey Kong Bananza to ensure a successful launch.

Forza Horizon x Nintendo Was Not on My Bingo Card

An open-world Mario Kart experience, inspired by games like Forza Horizon, is now a reality. The blend of Mario Kart's unique physics, eclectic vehicles, and combat should translate well into an expansive, continuous world reminiscent of Bowser's Fury, promising thrilling races and chaotic encounters.

It's Very Expensive

The Switch 2's price point of $449.99 USD is steep, especially when compared to its predecessors. This marks the highest launch price for any Nintendo console or handheld in the US market. With global economic factors like tariffs, currency fluctuations, and inflation at play, the Switch 2 will need to rely on its features and exclusive titles to justify its cost and succeed without the advantage of a lower price point.
