Honor of Kings Goes Global with Ban&Pick Format

by Sadie Feb 21,2025

Honor of Kings Unveils Major Esports Plans for 2025

Following its global launch, Honor of Kings is making significant strides in 2025. Key announcements include the inaugural Philippines Invitational (February 21st - March 1st) and, most notably, the global adoption of a ban & pick format for Season Three and all future tournaments.

This global rollout of the ban & pick system marks a significant change for the game. For the uninitiated, ban & pick means that once a hero is selected by a team in a match, that hero is ineligible for use by that team for the remainder of the tournament. While a team cannot use a hero twice, their opponents remain free to choose it.

This system adds a strategic layer, particularly for players who specialize in a limited roster of heroes. The decision-making process becomes more complex, forcing teams to consider both individual mastery and overall team synergy. Should a player prioritize their most skilled hero, even if a teammate is equally proficient? Or should they opt for a hero better suited to the current match-up?

A Strategic Shift

The popularity of ban & pick in MOBAs is undeniable. While not a novel concept—games like League of Legends and Rainbow Six Siege utilize similar mechanics—Honor of Kings' implementation introduces a key difference: the ban is determined in-game, after a hero is selected, rather than pre-determined. This places the decision directly in the hands of the players, emphasizing team communication and strategic coordination. This new dynamic is expected to significantly enhance the viewing experience and draw in new fans.
