Critical Role Video Game Announcement Could Arrive 'Any Day,' Travis Willingham Confirms

by Zoe Mar 14,2025

Critical Role, the wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons show, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting at an imminent announcement—potentially "any day now." This exciting news emerged during a recent interview with Business Insider. While details remain scarce regarding the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe, Willingham confirmed the development team is diligently working to bring this project to life.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," Willingham explained, highlighting the game's player agency.

Willingham, a prominent Critical Role cast member, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice actors Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. The D&D show's success has spawned a vast universe, including the hit Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

This upcoming video game will join Critical Role's expanding portfolio, though it won't necessarily be directly tied to existing projects. In December 2024, Willingham told Rolling Stone that the team was actively pursuing a video game spinoff, concluding a multi-year development process. Whether the game will follow a specific campaign or introduce an original story within Exandria remains to be seen.

While an announcement was initially expected before the end of 2024 or early 2025, the possibility of an imminent reveal is now highly anticipated. Willingham's comments to Rolling Stone highlighted the challenges of the interactive entertainment industry, noting that Critical Role is carefully navigating this landscape.

"Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels," Willingham stated. "You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem.”

A release date for the Critical Role video game is yet to be announced. In the meantime, fans can look forward to updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
