"Avowed Beginner's Guide Released"

by Aaron Apr 09,2025

*Avowed* is now available, and Obsidian's latest RPG strikes a balance between catering to seasoned players and welcoming newcomers. If you're new to RPGs, don't worry—I've got some tips to help you dive into *Avowed* with confidence.

Know the Basics

Like many RPGs, *Avowed* rewards you with XP for completing quests, defeating enemies, exploring new areas, and more. As you accumulate XP, you'll level up, earning attribute and ability points to customize your character. Whether you want to craft a formidable warrior or a potent wizard, the choice is yours.

Attributes determine your character's strengths. I often opt for the scholar class because I enjoy the lore, but *Avowed* encourages experimentation. A standout feature is the ability to re-roll your points if your chosen build isn't working out, making it exceptionally friendly for beginners.

Explore Avowed's World

Avowed World Exploration

*Avowed* offers a semi-open world, blending clear story objectives with the freedom to explore. While following markers can be tempting, the true essence of RPGs lies in getting lost in the world. Venturing into buildings, caves, and various areas can yield valuable loot and resources.

Side quests are plentiful and often easy, providing a boost of XP. Don't overlook books and notes, as they enrich the story and world-building Obsidian is known for. Keep an eye out for treasure maps, which can lead to unique gear or a hefty sum of coins.

Exploring thoroughly will also net you plenty of gold, crucial for acquiring better weapons and gear. This can make a significant difference in combat, especially against tougher foes. Rushing through the main story might leave you underpowered, so take your time to prepare.

Stock Up On Health and Essence Potions

Combat in *Avowed* can be challenging for newcomers. Balancing physical and essence attacks while monitoring your health and essence bars is key. Health and essence potions are vital—health potions restore a significant amount of health, while essence potions refill your essence bar. You'll find these potions scattered throughout the world or available from vendors in cities, easily identifiable by their bright red (health) and pink (essence) glows.

Use potions judiciously; save health potions for when your health is critically low. For minor health losses, use food items you find around the world. Some food and herbs can also counteract effects like poison, so hold onto them for when you need them most.

Give Your Companions Some Love

Avowed Companions

Each level up provides skill and attribute points to enhance your character's combat and dialogue skills. However, don't overlook your companions. Upgrading their abilities is just as important; neglecting them can lead to frustrating restarts after tough battles.

Strong companions not only aid in combat but can also provide healing support. A well-upgraded party can turn the tide of battle, making victories much smoother and less stressful.

Upgrade Your Gear

As you explore, you'll gather resources that can be used to upgrade your weapons and gear at the camp's upgrade station. Early on, you might switch weapons frequently, so be strategic about where you invest your resources. Upgrading gear can significantly boost your attack power, critical chance, and damage protection, making it a worthwhile investment.

Have Fun and Play Your Way

Avowed Gameplay

The beauty of *Avowed* lies in its ability to let you get lost in another world. Whether you focus on the main story or delve into every side quest, the game is designed to let you craft your own narrative. Enjoy saving the Living Lands in your unique way.
