The Last of Us Part 2 PC Port Will Require PSN Account

The Last of Us Part II Remastered's PC release on April 3rd, 2025, necessitates a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, sparking controversy among potential players. This requirement, also present in previous PC ports of PlayStation exclusives, forces users to create or link a PSN account to play, a move criticized by many.

While bringing the acclaimed sequel to PC is a positive step, expanding its reach beyond PlayStation consoles and the PS5 remaster, the PSN mandate dampens enthusiasm. The Steam page explicitly states this requirement, allowing players to link existing PSN accounts. This detail, easily overlooked, is a significant point of contention, echoing negative reactions to similar requirements in past PC ports. Last year, Sony even backtracked on a planned PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 due to strong player backlash.

Sony's rationale for requiring a PSN account is unclear for a single-player title like The Last of Us Part II. Unlike games with multiplayer components, such as Ghost of Tsushima, where a PSN profile is needed for online features, this requirement seems primarily aimed at encouraging PSN adoption among PC gamers. While understandable from a business standpoint, this strategy risks alienating players, especially considering past negative feedback.

Although a basic PSN account is free, the added step of creating or linking an account is an inconvenience. Furthermore, the PSN's global availability is limited, potentially excluding some fans from playing the PC port. This restriction clashes with the Last of Us franchise's reputation for accessibility, potentially causing further frustration among players.
