Saw XI 'Stalled at a Managerial Level' Due to Lionsgate and Producer Tensions

by Anthony Mar 20,2025

It’s hard to believe, but the Saw franchise is on hold, at least for now. The upcoming Saw XI, originally slated for a fall release, has been indefinitely delayed. This isn't a creative roadblock; screenwriter Patrick Melton told The Hollywood Reporter the issue stems from managerial disagreements between producers and Lionsgate. A script was submitted nearly a year ago, but internal conflicts are preventing the project from moving forward. Melton stated, "It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.”

Frequent franchise director Kevin Gruetert was attached in December 2023, initially setting a September 2024 release. The delay to September 2025 disappointed fans, especially after Saw X’s box office success ($120 million globally), which fueled anticipation for a sequel.

While plot details remain under wraps, Melton hinted that Saw XI would explore timely themes, similar to Saw VI, which he and writing partner Marcus Dunstan penned, focusing on a revenge plot against health insurance executives. Melton expressed hope the film will eventually be made due to its relevant storyline, stating, “Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that. It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you’re a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can’t do anything, and John Kramer’s going to do it.” The potential exploration of these themes in the current climate makes the delay all the more frustrating for fans.
