Upcoming Capcom Franchise Revivals Continue
Capcom is reviving classic IPs, focusing on high-quality releases. This strategy begins with new entries in the Okami and Onimusha franchises.
Reviving Dormant Franchises
Capcom's December 13th press release confirmed a continued focus on reactivating underutilized IPs. Onimusha, set in Edo-period Kyoto, launches in 2026. A new Okami sequel, co-developed by the original team, is also in the works, though its release date remains undisclosed.
The company aims to boost value by leveraging its extensive catalog. Alongside these revivals, Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 are scheduled for 2025. This doesn't mean new IP development is ceasing; recent releases include Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Fan Input Shapes the Future
Capcom's February 2024 "Super Election" provided valuable player feedback on desired sequels and remakes. Strong support for Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire suggests these long-dormant franchises are prime candidates for future projects.
While Capcom remains discreet about specific plans, the "Super Election" results offer a strong indication of which classic IPs may be resurrected next. The renewed interest in Onimusha and Okami further underscores the success of this revival strategy.
