Trump's Tariffs: ESA Warns of Harm to Consumers

by Harper Mar 13,2025

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), representing major video game companies like Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, and others, urges the Trump administration to collaborate with the private sector to mitigate the potential negative impacts of import tariffs on the video game industry. In a statement to IGN, the ESA highlighted the popularity of video games and emphasized that tariffs on gaming devices and related products would harm the industry's substantial contribution to the U.S. economy. They expressed their willingness to work with the administration and Congress to ensure continued economic growth within the sector.

President Trump's recent order imposing tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico has prompted retaliatory measures. While a temporary pause on Mexico tariffs has been announced, the potential for tariffs with the European Union and the UK remains. President Trump has criticized both the EU and the UK's trade practices, suggesting further tariff actions are possible.

Industry analysts are assessing the potential ramifications. David Gibson of MST Financial believes the China tariff would have minimal impact on the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S., but tariffs on Vietnam could alter this. He also notes potential challenges for the PlayStation 5, suggesting Sony might increase non-China production to offset any tariff-related issues. Joost van Dreunen, author of the Super Joost newsletter, highlighted the broader economic implications, including the potential influence of tariffs on consumer reception of new consoles like the upcoming Nintendo Switch. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions and potential for significant impacts on the video game industry.
