Tribe Nine, from the creator of Danganronpa, set to open pre-registration

by Ava Jan 13,2025
  • Tribe Nine has opened pre-registration for Android and iOS!
  • It's a mobile RPG featuring Danganronpa alumni Rui Komatsuzaki and Kazutaka Kodaka
  • Those who pre-register can nab an exclusive skin and other rewards

If there was anything that defined PSP visual novel and detective thriller Danganronpa, it was both the art of Rui Komatsuzaki and the contributions of designer Kazutaka Kodaka. If you weren't already aware, they and other Danganronpa alumni are also teaming up for Tribe Nine, a mobile ARPG that's just launched pre-registration for iOS and Android

Set in the requisite dystopian future of 20XX in Neo-Tokyo, it sees you playing as a group of teenagers participating in the deadly Extreme Games orchestrated by the mysterious Zero. Those who pre-register for Tribe Nine will be rewarded with an exclusive skin and other goodies, being able to nab Parallel Cypher / Y skin for Koishi Kohinata.

Naturally, you also have the mix of deadly action and pseudo-retro gubbins that Kodaka and Komatsuzaki's collaborations are known for, as you explore the overworld in retro sprite style before jumping into full-fledged 3D battles. You'll also be able to experiment with equipment and the signature feature of Tension Cards to produce truly distinct builds.

Although Danganronpa is considered a bit passe nowadays, I do remember when it was considered to be one of the more original releases for the PSP. The mix of distinct art and the murder-mystery plot really made it stand out from what many people assumed visual novels were and could be.

Whether or not Tribe Nine meets the same reception is something I'm not sure about. Sure, aesthetics-wise it does stand out, but 3D turn-based battlers are something that seems to be on every storefront and releasing constantly, so it'll need to do something quite special to stand out.
