There's a New Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition Coming in November, but Still No Winds of Winter

by Patrick Mar 20,2025

George R.R. Martin recently shared exciting news on his blog, though not about the highly anticipated *The Winds of Winter*. Instead, he unveiled the cover for the illustrated edition of *A Feast for Crows*, the fourth book in the *A Song of Ice and Fire* series to receive this special treatment. The artwork is by Jeffrey R. McDonald.

A Feast for Crows: The Illustrated Edition is slated for release on November 4, 2025. Pre-orders are now open at major book retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

This announcement is welcome news for collectors of the illustrated editions. The last release, A Storm of Swords, debuted in November 2020, making it a five-year wait between illustrated editions. This new edition will include a foreword by Joe Abercrombie, and a preview of the interior illustrations will be shared later this spring.

What About *The Winds of Winter*?

For those eagerly awaiting *The Winds of Winter*, the news is less encouraging. Martin's most recent update, from December 2024, acknowledged the possibility that he may not complete the book in his lifetime, despite having written 1,100 pages (as of November 2023). While disappointing, this doesn't entirely extinguish hope for the series' completion. The release of the fourth illustrated edition suggests the first five illustrated books will be completed before *The Winds of Winter*, however.

Do you think George R.R. Martin will finish *A Song of Ice and Fire*?
