by George Apr 05,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in the HBO drama series "Euphoria," "The White Lotus," and the recent superhero film "Madame Web," is reportedly in final negotiations to star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, "Mobile Suit Gundam." This exciting development comes as the film, which is still without an official title, entered production in February following a co-financing agreement between Bandai Namco and Legendary.

The project will be helmed by Kim Mickle, the showrunner of "Sweet Tooth," who will both write and direct the film. While specific plot details and a release window remain under wraps, a teaser poster has been released to generate anticipation among fans. The film is slated for a global theatrical release, promising to bring the beloved franchise to a wider audience.

Variety reported on Sweeney's involvement with the "Gundam" movie, though the specifics of her character and the plot are yet to be disclosed. This role adds to Sweeney's diverse portfolio, which recently included her attachment to a horror movie based on a Reddit thread, where she will also serve as a producer.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their commitment to sharing more details as they are finalized. They highlighted the significance of "Mobile Suit Gundam," which first aired in 1979 and revolutionized the genre of 'real robot anime.' The series broke away from the traditional good vs. evil narrative, offering realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific exploration, and complex human dramas centered around the use of 'mobile suits' as weapons. This groundbreaking approach sparked a massive cultural phenomenon and continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
