Suikoden Fans Rejoice With the Announcement of a Suikoden 2 Anime...and a Brand New Mobile Gacha Game

by Audrey Mar 17,2025

This week, Konami surprised and delighted classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-focused livestream. The franchise's absence of a new mainline entry for over a decade fueled high anticipation. The announcements, however, were a mixed bag: a Suikoden anime (fantastic!), and a new mobile game with gacha mechanics (less so).

Let's start with the good news: Suikoden: The Anime. Based on Suikoden II, it marks Konami's first animation production. While details remain scarce, including international availability, a brief scene preview was shown:

This is undeniably exciting for longtime fans and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers, assuming broad accessibility.

The second announcement, Suikoden: Star Leap, is more divisive. This new game boasts stunning visuals, reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, featuring 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. Set chronologically between Suikoden I and Suikoden V, it retains the series' signature 108 Stars.

However, its mobile-only release and inclusion of gacha mechanics are points of contention. This monetization strategy contrasts sharply with the series' history of premium console and PC releases. The long-term impact on gameplay and character collection remains to be seen.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, which received a new trailer during the livestream and releases March 6th.
