The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key enhancements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned to fit more snugly on the ear, creating a better seal and thus improving passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is significantly better than the XM4 and outperforms most other noise-canceling headsets in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also boasts a sleek redesign with an updated headband adjustment style.
