Sony Updates PSN Policy for PC, Unveils New Gifts

Sony's recent policy changes regarding PC gaming have sparked significant debate among gamers. Initially, the company mandated tethering to PlayStation Network (PSN) even for single-player games, a requirement that frustrated many due to its limited availability across regions, thereby restricting sales of modern releases.

In response to widespread criticism, Sony has announced modifications to this policy. While not completely abandoning the idea of PSN tethering on PC, they have introduced some relaxations. Specifically, the following games will no longer require mandatory PSN tethering:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

For those who choose to connect to PSN, Sony offers enticing incentives:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" line of costumes for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
  • God of War Ragnarok: Immediate access to the Armor of the Black Bear set from the first "Lost Things" chest, along with a resource pack.
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered: Bonus points to unlock additional features.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.

Sony's Chief Operating Officer, Hiroki Totoki, addressed investor concerns in November, acknowledging the opposition to PSN tethering. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining security and order, particularly for service-based games. However, he did not clarify how requiring a PSN account enhances security in single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Sony's adjustments reflect an attempt to balance user demands with their strategic objectives.
