Sony Cutting PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus Next Year

by Lucas Feb 21,2025

Sony is phasing out PlayStation 4 games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials and Games Catalog starting January 2026, focusing its efforts on PlayStation 5 titles.

This shift, announced alongside February 2025's PlayStation Plus monthly games, reflects Sony's observation that a significant portion of its player base has transitioned to PS5. The blog post clarified that already-obtained PS4 games will remain accessible, and Games Catalog titles will stay available until their scheduled removal. However, future PS Plus monthly games and Game Catalog additions will primarily feature PS5 titles, with occasional PS4 offerings.

Sony emphasized its commitment to enhancing PlayStation Plus, promising continued improvements to benefits such as exclusive discounts, online multiplayer, and cloud saves. The company anticipates adding new PS5 games to the monthly lineup going forward.

With the PS5's release in 2020 following the PS4's 2013 debut, Sony's decision reflects the market shift towards next-generation consoles. The company's statement indicates that many players are primarily engaging with PS5 titles.

The future placement of PS4 games within the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog (currently housing PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 titles) remains unconfirmed. Further announcements are expected closer to the implementation date.
