by Finn Apr 27,2025

In an unexpected twist that's sure to delight fans of nostalgia and cinematic adventures, a live-action Toys "R" Us movie is currently in development. According to Variety, the creative team at Story Kitchen—known for their work on recent video game adaptations like the Sonic the Hedgehog movies—aims to evoke "childhood wonder" in a thrilling, modern narrative that celebrates the Toys 'R' Us brand's enduring legacy over its 70+ years in the toy industry.

“Toys 'R' Us is a cultural touchstone that continues impacting the child in all of us today,” stated Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. As self-proclaimed '80s kids, they are thrilled to bring this project to life, aiming to encapsulate the "spirit of adventure, creativity and nostalgia" inherent to the Toys 'R' Us experience.

The film draws inspiration from beloved movies such as Night at the Museum, Back to the Future, and Big, as well as successful toy-to-movie franchises like Barbie. While specifics about the cast remain under wraps, the project will be produced by Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval of Story Kitchen, alongside Kim Miller Olko of Toys "R" Us Studios.

“As Toys "R" Us first film, this project is an exciting opportunity to bring the magic of our brand to the big screen,” said Miller Olko, president of Toys "R" Us Studios. She emphasized that the film will embody the "electric sense of wonder" central to the Toys "R" Us experience, promising a story that captures the "imagination, adventure and joy" that has made the store a beloved destination for kids of all ages.

Story Kitchen's track record extends beyond Toys "R" Us, with last year's announcement of a film adaptation of Square Enix's Just Cause, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto of Blue Beetle fame. The studio is also working on adaptations of Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, and Sleeping Dogs, showcasing their commitment to bringing diverse and exciting stories to the screen.
