Protect Your Sanctuary: Master Window Barricade Techniques in Project Zomboid

by Matthew Feb 23,2025

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid requires more than just finding a suitable location. Fortifying your base against the undead hordes is crucial, and barricading windows is a fundamental step. This guide outlines how to effectively board up your windows and enhance your base's defenses.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To barricade a window, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essential items, right-click on the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Finding the necessary materials is relatively straightforward. Hammers and nails are commonly found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are frequently located on construction sites, or you can salvage them by dismantling wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.). Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access. The more planks you add, the more time it takes for the undead to breach the defenses. To remove planks, right-click on them and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to perform this action.

Larger furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as window barriers; characters and zombies will pass right through them. However, knowing how to move furniture remains a useful skill for interior arrangement.

For superior defenses, consider metal bars or sheets. However, crafting these requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
