Pokémon TCG Pocket Has No Plans To Go Competitive
The Pokémon Company has confirmed it currently has no plans to include Pokémon TCG Pocket in its competitive circuit. Let's delve into the reasons behind this decision and what the future might hold for the game's competitive prospects.
Pokémon TCG Pocket: No Competitive Scene (Yet)
In a recent interview with VGC (February 25, 2025), Chris Brown, Director of eSports at The Pokémon Company, stated that while they constantly explore new titles for competitive inclusion, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently on the roadmap. He playfully mentioned Pokémon Sleep as another example of a title not currently in the competitive arena, referencing a past April Fool's joke. However, he emphasized that the possibility remains open for future consideration.
Why the Hold-Up? Early Stages and Balancing
While no official reasons have been given, several factors likely contribute to this decision. Pokémon TCG Pocket, launched only four months prior (October 2024) and with only two sets released, is still in its infancy. Although the app includes competitive features, ongoing balancing issues remain a concern for players. Furthermore, the game's simplified mechanics, designed for a more accessible and beginner-friendly experience, might not readily translate to the complexities of a competitive environment. The core design philosophy is currently focused on accessibility rather than intense competition.
Despite this, the Pokémon Competitive Circuit continues to thrive with events featuring Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite, all culminating in the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California, August 2025.
Pokémon Presents: A Glimpse into the Future?
The upcoming Pokémon Presents could potentially shed light on Pokémon TCG Pocket's future. With the recent release of the Space Time Smackdown set (January 30, 2025), anticipation is high for new announcements. While the livestream's content remains undisclosed, speculation abounds regarding significant reveals for the franchise. Furthermore, updates on Pokémon Legends: Z-A (announced for a 2025 release) and newly announced Mega Evolutions are highly anticipated. The event may offer valuable insights into Pokémon's broader plans and the direction of its various games.
The Pokémon Day 2025 Pokémon Presents livestream will air on February 27, 2025, at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET, on YouTube and Twitch. Stay tuned for updates! For the latest information on Pokémon TCG Pocket, check out our dedicated page.
