Pokemon TCG Pocket: Paralyzed, Explained (& All Cards with ‘Paralyze’ Ability)

by Nora Feb 08,2025

This guide explores the Paralyze effect in Pokémon TCG Pocket, explaining its mechanics, counters, and potential deck-building strategies. The guide is part of a larger Pokemon TCG Pocket Guide.

Quick Links

Pokémon TCG Pocket faithfully recreates the Paralyzed status effect from the physical card game. This guide details its function, cure methods, and effective deck-building approaches.

Understanding Paralysis in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Paralyzed Status

The Paralyzed status condition immobilizes the opponent's Active Pokémon for a single turn, preventing attacks and retreats. The effect automatically resolves at the start of the opponent's next turn.

Paralyzed vs. Asleep

Both Paralyzed and Asleep prevent attacks and retreats. However, Paralyzed resolves automatically, while Asleep requires a coin flip or specific card effects to cure.

Paralyzed Rules: Pokémon TCG Pocket vs. Physical TCG

Unlike the physical game (where cards like Full Heal exist), Pokémon TCG Pocket currently lacks direct counter-Paralysis cards; however, the core mechanic remains consistent: a Paralyzed Pokémon is incapacitated for one turn.

Pokémon with the Paralysis Ability

Pokémon with Paralyze

In the Genetic Apex expansion, Pincurchin, Elektross, and Articuno are the only Pokémon capable of inflicting Paralysis. Each relies on a coin flip, making it a chance-based effect.

Recovering from Paralysis

Recovering from Paralysis

Four methods exist to remove the Paralyzed status:

  1. Time: The effect ends automatically at the start of your next turn.
  2. Evolution: Evolving the affected Pokémon instantly cures Paralysis.
  3. Retreat: Retreating the Pokémon removes the status (as Bench Pokémon cannot have status conditions).
  4. Support Cards: Currently, only Koga offers a direct counter, but only under specific conditions (Weezing or Muk).

Optimal Paralyze Deck Strategies

Paralyze Deck Example

Paralysis alone isn't a reliable deck archetype. Combining it with Asleep, however, offers a potent strategy. A strong combination uses Articuno & Frosmoth, leveraging their attacks to inflict both statuses.

Sample Paralyze-Asleep Deck

Card Quantity
Wigglypuff ex 2
Jigglypuff 2
Snom 2
Frosmoth 2
Articuno 2
Misty 2
Sabrina 2
X Speed 2
Professor's Research 2
Poke Ball 2
