PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Hole-in-One

If 2K were to tackle a new pro sports simulation franchise, a resurrected NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's clear there's much to enjoy.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished gameplay. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly massive course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the core gameplay is undeniably fun. Minor issues like occasional framerate hiccups on PC (particularly when surveying holes) are easily overlooked.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging gameplay, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee shots based on course obstacles adds further depth. Improved ball physics also contribute to a more realistic feel. Playing as cover athlete Tiger Woods certainly enhanced the initial experience.

MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative mechanics, similar to other sports titles. The inclusion of Christopher "Shooter McGavin" McDonald (though not as his Happy Gilmore persona) adds a touch of humor. Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further affects performance. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests, such as achieving consecutive birdies, provides ongoing goals.

PlayWhile I didn't extensively explore the MyPlayer creator, it offers sufficient customization options and skill trees. Multiplayer features, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic titles like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with differing time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it less immediately captivating, but it's a solid, enjoyable golf game. A playable demo is currently available, allowing players to experience the game firsthand before purchasing.
