Patch 7 Unleashes Modding Surge for BG3
Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th release. He highlighted the significant impact of modding on the game's success: "Modding is pretty big." This figure was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that installs surpassed three million and are still climbing.
Patch 7's impact extends beyond the modding surge. It introduced new evil endings, improved split-screen, and, crucially, Larian's own integrated Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies browsing, installation, and management of community-created mods.
The existing modding tools, available separately via Steam, empower modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools facilitate custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer reported on a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) that unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously disabled features within Larian's editor. While Larian has previously been selective about releasing all development tools, stating "We are a game development company, we're not a tools company," the community's enthusiasm is undeniable.
Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the complexity of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will come first, with console support following after addressing potential issues.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 boasts numerous improvements, including UI enhancements, new animations, expanded dialogue, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. Future updates from Larian are expected, and further details on cross-platform modding plans will likely be revealed soon.
