Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Unlocking New Gameplay Innovations

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the adoption of this mouse-like control mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

This intriguing possibility stems from data uncovered by Famiboards user LiC. LiC previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024. In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." The term "mouse soles," typically referring to the bottom of a computer mouse, strongly hints at mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The data indicates both tape pieces measure 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, although trimming would likely be necessary.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented in the handheld market. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to facilitate smoother surface movement in this mode.

The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for controller attachment, a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further suggests potential design parallels between the two devices.
