MultiVersus Shuts Down After Season 5 Ends in May

by Isabella Apr 14,2025

Player First Games has announced that Season 5 of MultiVersus will be the final chapter for the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, set to conclude on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a detailed blog post on their website, marking the end of the road for the crossover brawler that initially launched on May 28 of the previous year. Season 5 kicks off next week on February 4 and will run until the game's support officially ends in May 2025. At that time, online play will cease, but Player First assures that players will still have access to all their earned and purchased content in offline modes, including local gameplay and training.

In their farewell message, the MultiVersus team expressed heartfelt gratitude to their community: “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Player First also confirmed that real-money transactions for MultiVersus are no longer available as of today. However, players can still use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the end of support on May 30. Additionally, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project a major disappointment. In a financial call in November, the company revealed that MultiVersus had underperformed significantly, leading to a $100 million writedown in their games sector. This added to a total of $300 million in losses after the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Just last week, Variety reported that David Haddad, head of Warner Bros. Games, would be departing the company following a challenging 2024.

"We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” stated Gunnar Wiedenfels, chief financial officer, during the November call.

Despite the looming shutdown just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to go out with a flourish. Alongside the typical new content that seasonal updates bring, fans can look forward to the addition of new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman. Lola Bunny, the Looney Toons icon, will be available as a daily calendar reward, while the DC superhero Aquaman can be unlocked through the battle pass, starting next week.
