Monster Hunter Wilds Doesn't Have New Weapons Because They're Hard to Come Up With
Monster Hunter developers face a significant challenge: creating new weapon types for the series. This article delves into the complexities of weapon balancing and reveals details about the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration event.
Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Consider Adding a New Weapon Type
The Elusive 15th Weapon
For over a decade, Monster Hunter players have wielded the same 14 weapon types, the last addition being the Insect Glaive in Monster Hunter 4. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility of introducing a 15th weapon type. While not entirely ruled out, Tokuda explained the considerable hurdles involved. The challenge lies in creating a weapon that feels unique and doesn't overlap significantly with existing options. He emphasized the extensive resources and time required to properly balance a new weapon within the existing system, a process that, he argues, has been better spent refining the existing 14 weapons in recent titles.
Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom continues to innovate, however, refining existing weapons for Monster Hunter Wilds with additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda stressed the importance of maintaining the core feel of each weapon, avoiding drastic changes that would alienate longtime players. He highlighted the iterative balancing process, explaining that each title aims for a specific "feel" for each weapon type, a concept only truly tested once players engage with the game. Balancing Wilds' weapons presented unique challenges, particularly given Iceborne's addition of high-level moves and abilities. This expansion, targeting experienced players, set a high bar for Wilds' weapon balancing, requiring a careful consideration of both new and existing mechanics. Ultimately, Wilds represents a fresh start, with a deliberate effort to overhaul the entire weapon system, prioritizing gameplay feel over simply retaining previously popular features.
Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds Collaboration Event Phase 2
Phase 2 of the Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds collaboration event kicks off February 28, 2025, commemorating Wilds’ release. This phase introduces the Chatacabra to Monster Hunter Now, alongside 12 Hope weapons from Wilds, and two new layered armors: a Hope armor style and a Seikret mount-themed armor. Players can also earn vouchers for Wilds items—Mega Potions, Dust of Life, Energy Drinks, Well-done Steak, and Dash Juice—by completing limited-time quests in Monster Hunter Now, redeemable across all Wilds platforms.
Niantic Senior Producer Sakae Osumi, in an February 18, 2025 press briefing for Season 5, hinted at future collaborations, expressing a desire to incorporate more monsters from Wilds into Monster Hunter Now.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
