"Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story"

by Isabella Apr 23,2025

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative team behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from The NeverEnding Story. In a particular scene, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious position, having to climb onto Jason Momoa's character, Garrett, due to a shortage of Elytra wings, which were only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's character, Henry. This sequence not only delivers physical comedy but also showcases a deeper homage.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story, aiming for something majestic and beautiful, yet quickly turning chaotic," said A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during the breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on Jason, amidst a complex rig, and he started singing The NeverEnding Story's theme, playfully riding Jason as if he were Falkor."

This nod is especially amusing because Jack Black previously portrayed Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, this scene was not only fun but also a significant creative contribution.

"I was involved in writing that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa said with a chuckle. "Inspired by Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to incorporate a stunt where I could suddenly brake and have Jack slide off, which we brainstormed in our hotel room. It's incredible that this concept made it into the movie."

"While there were several versions of that scene, and some were quite risqué, we opted for a family-friendly approach," Jack Black explained. "I'm not sure if the wilder takes made the final cut."

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa exclaimed. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
