Konami Unveils Mobile Suikoden: Star Leap

Suikoden is back! Well, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, set to be a free-to-play experience. While a release date remains unannounced, a launch later this year is anticipated.

For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, originally conceived by Yoshitaka Murayama and published by Konami since 1995, is a collection of RPGs loosely based on the Chinese novel Water Margin. Known for its intricate political storylines, True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny, the series boasts eleven entries (including spin-offs), with its last main installment released in 2012. Instead of a direct sequel or full-fledged revival, Konami is offering Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile game.

The protagonist, Hou, son of a village chief, celebrates his first successful hunt before disaster strikes—a devastating attack on his village. This event propels Hou, alongside his servant Hisui (possessing a mysterious emotional suppression), childhood friend Shirin (driven by a strong sense of justice), and former general-turned-butler Shapur, on a quest to restore peace.

Mixed reactions within the community are understandable. Longtime Suikoden fans, yearning for a proper continuation, may find the gacha format of STAR LEAP a less-than-ideal solution.
