Historic Looney Tunes Shorts Removed From HBO Max on Looney Tunes Movie Opening Weekend
Warner Brothers' recent removal of its classic Looney Tunes shorts from HBO Max has sent shockwaves through animation fans and cultural critics alike. These shorts, spanning nearly four decades (1930-1969), represent a golden age of animation and are undeniably foundational to Warner Brothers' success. The company cites a shift towards "adult and family programming" as the reason, highlighting the streaming service's focus on content that generates higher viewership numbers. This decision, however, disregards the immense cultural significance of these iconic cartoons. The cancellation of the HBO Max Sesame Street deal in late 2024 further underscores this apparent prioritization of short-term gains over long-term cultural impact. While some newer Looney Tunes projects remain on the platform, the core legacy of the franchise is now absent.
This action is particularly perplexing given the recent theatrical release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Story on March 14th. Initially an HBO Max project, the film was sold to Ketchup Entertainment following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The film's modest box office performance (just over $3 million opening weekend in over 2,800 theaters) suggests a limited marketing budget. This contrasts sharply with the outcry surrounding the unreleased Coyote Vs. Acme, a film that generated significant artist and fan frustration when Warner Bros. Discovery shelved it due to perceived high distribution costs. Will Forte's outspoken condemnation of this decision ("f—king bulls—t") reflects the widespread disappointment and anger felt by many. The current situation leaves many wondering if greater awareness of The Day the Earth Blew Up's theatrical release might have improved its performance, especially considering the passion surrounding the Looney Tunes legacy.
