by Victoria Apr 17,2025

Warner Bros. and HBO have officially unveiled the first six actors who will portray iconic Hogwarts professors in the highly anticipated Harry Potter television series. The announcement comes after months of speculation and rumors surrounding the new adaptation of the beloved Wizarding World saga, which will reimagine the adventures of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

The casting reveal includes John Lithgow, previously confirmed to play Albus Dumbledore, joining a talented ensemble that fans have eagerly anticipated. Lithgow, known for his roles in "Conclave" and "Dexter," expressed his excitement and the weight of taking on such a defining role late in his career. "I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid," he shared with ScreenRant earlier this year. "But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes."

Joining Lithgow are Nick Frost, who will bring Rubeus Hagrid to life, and Paapa Essiedu, set to portray Severus Snape. Frost, recognized from "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz," and Essiedu, acclaimed for his performances in "I May Destroy You" and "Black Mirror," are poised to add their unique flair to these cherished characters.

Completing the initial cast are Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. McTeer, known for her roles in "Me Before You" and "The Menu," Thallon, who has appeared in "The Favourite" and "Present Laughter," and Whitehouse, famous from "The Fast Show" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass," round out this impressive lineup.

Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, along with director and executive producer Mark Mylod, expressed their enthusiasm about the cast. "We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life," they stated.

The Harry Potter series, while still without a confirmed release date, is expected to start filming soon. Warner Bros. has promised that the show will delve deeper into Harry's story than the original films allowed, offering fans a more comprehensive look at the Wizarding World. J.K. Rowling, the series' controversial author, is involved in the show's development.
