Harry Potter: Magic Awakened EOS Announced, Guess The Spells Didn’t Work After All!

NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement impacts the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.

Initially released in China in September 2021, the game enjoyed a strong launch. A global release followed in June 2022, after delays dampened initial excitement. While the Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and wizarding world setting initially resonated with players, the game ultimately failed to maintain significant traction.

The decision to shut down stems from a combination of factors. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration with a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics. A controversial rework of the reward system negatively impacted free-to-play players, slowing progression and reducing the value of skill. The game's removal from the Google Play Store in affected regions began on August 26th.

Despite its closure in these regions, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened offers a unique blend of card battles, Hogwarts atmosphere, and social interaction. For those in unaffected regions, the game remains available, allowing players to experience dorm life, attend classes, uncover mysteries, and engage in wizarding duels.
