When you start a new character in Stardew Valley, you can adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm as a pet. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that, allowing for multiple pets.

To unlock the ability to adopt more pets, you must first maximize your friendship level with your current pet. This involves ensuring their water bowl is filled daily with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; a heart bubble will appear over their head to confirm you've done so. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notice from Marnie about adopting more pets. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, you'll receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential as they provide water and serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing them from running away if neglected. Each Pet Bowl costs 5,000g and requires 25 x Hardwood, which you can obtain with a Copper Axe or better. It's advisable to build these bowls before adopting your new pets to maintain their friendship levels.
