Free-to-Play Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Weeks After Console Launch

by Blake Mar 21,2025

Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide, launched in September 2024, is shutting down just six months later, weeks after its release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell announced the news via social media. His statement explained that the Season 1 launch failed to achieve the necessary success to sustain the game and the studio. Despite an initial promising start, attracting approximately 400,000 players in its first week with a peak concurrent player count of around 10,000 across all platforms, the game ultimately lacked the sustained player base and revenue needed to cover operational costs. Despite exploring options like securing a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding.

Mitchell stated that the studio stretched its remaining capital as far as possible, but ultimately ran out of funds to support the game. He acknowledged the current challenging climate within the gaming industry.

Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any money spent since the Season 1 launch.

This news contradicts October 2024 reports assuring players that Spectre Divide was not facing closure. At that time, Mitchell stated that Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support the game long-term.

PlayIGN's August 2024 preview praised *Spectre Divide*'s unique Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, the game's swift shutdown follows a trend of failed live-service titles, including *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and *Concord*.
