Rainbow Six Siege X Showcase Unveils Exciting Updates

Closed Beta Kicks Off on March 13, 2025

Ubisoft has officially announced that the Rainbow Six Siege X (R6 Siege X) Closed Beta will run from March 13th at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET / 8 PM CET until March 19th at the same times. This event follows immediately after the R6 Siege X Showcase, offering fans an early taste of the game's latest developments.

To participate in the R6 Siege X Closed Beta, fans can watch the R6 Siege X Showcase on the official Rainbow 6 Twitch channel or through various Content Creators' Twitch livestreams to earn Closed Beta Twitch drops. The beta will be accessible on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

However, some players have reported not receiving their access codes via email. Ubisoft Support acknowledged this issue on Twitter (X) on March 14 and is actively working to resolve it promptly.

It's important to clarify that R6 Siege X is not a standalone new game but a significant update designed to elevate the Siege experience with advanced graphical and technical enhancements.

Introducing Dual Front: A Dynamic 6v6 Game Mode

Ubisoft has unveiled Dual Front, a new 6v6 game mode that promises "foundational upgrades to the core game." These include visual enhancements, an audio overhaul, rappel upgrades, and more, along with revamped player protection systems. Dual Front also offers free access, inviting players to experience the tactical action of Rainbow Six Siege without cost.

Set on a new map called District, Dual Front pits two teams of six Operators against each other, with each team simultaneously attacking and defending sectors. This unique setup introduces new strategic possibilities through gadget combinations and innovative tactics.

While Dual Front brings fresh excitement, the classic Siege mode remains, now rebranded as "Core Siege." This mode includes updated versions of five iconic maps: Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe, with enhanced textures and destructible materials. Only these five maps will be modernized initially, with more updates planned for future seasons.

Free Access Begins in Season 2 of Year 10

After a decade, Rainbow Six Siege will transition to a free-to-play model starting in Season 2 of Year 10. This shift aligns with the industry trend seen among its competitors, reflecting the evolution from the paid multiplayer models of 2015.

During the R6 Siege X Showcase in Atlanta on March 13, Game Director Alexander Karpazis shared with PC Gamer that the team aims to attract new players. "We want people to invite their friends to try out Siege, and we want to give them the majority of the game so that they understand what makes this game so special," Karpazis explained. He emphasized the importance of social play, stating, "That reduces the barrier to entry, because honestly Siege is at its best when you've got friends playing with you."

The free access will include Unranked, Quick Play, and the new Dual Front modes. However, Ranked mode and the Siege Cup will still require a premium purchase. This approach aims to deter smurfs and cheaters while maintaining a competitive environment for dedicated players. Leroy Athanassoff, former game director, highlighted this strategy in a 2020 interview with PC Gamer, saying, "Having that barrier to Ranked or Siege Cup means you have to be committed to the game. It does mean we weed out smurfs, and it means we're prepared to continue supporting the most competitive aspect of the game."

No Plans for Siege 2

Despite reaching its 10-year milestone, Ubisoft has no plans to release a sequel, Rainbow Six Siege 2. Game Director Alexander Karpazis emphasized this during the R6 Siege X Showcase, stating, "Siege 2 was never on the table. A lot of live service games are starting to go through this process because a lot of them are hitting that 10-year mark."

Karpazis elaborated on the decision, saying, "We just had to do what was right for Siege and what was right for players as well. When we go back in time three years ago, that was the main focus for us." The development of Siege X has been ongoing for three years, running parallel to the game's regular seasonal updates. Karpazis views Siege X as a pivotal moment to implement significant, meaningful changes, saying, "Siege X, for us, is a moment where we want to make big, meaningful changes to the game. We want to show that, yes, we're here for another 10 years, and we want to respect the people who brought us here so far."

He also acknowledged the crucial role of the community, noting, "You don't get to 10 years as a live service game without the community that built you up."
