Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Slow Box Office Start

by Logan Apr 08,2025

Snow White, directed by Marc Webb, known for The Amazing Spider-Man series, had a challenging opening weekend at the box office. According to Comscore, the film grossed $43 million domestically, marking it as the second highest opening of 2025, trailing only behind Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping this week's chart, Snow White fell short of the $45 million domestic debut of the live-action Dumbo in 2019 and did not meet pre-release expectations.

For comparison, other Disney live-action remakes like 2019's The Lion King, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2016's The Jungle Book, and 2023's The Little Mermaid all opened with over $100 million domestically. Internationally, Snow White earned $44.3 million, bringing its global total to $87.3 million, as reported by Comscore.

Snow White, a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1937 animated classic, features Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. With a production budget exceeding $250 million, the film now faces a steep challenge to break even, especially when marketing expenses are considered.

However, there is potential for Snow White to follow in the footsteps of Mufasa: The Lion King, which, despite a modest $35.4 million domestic opening, went on to earn over $717 million worldwide. Disney is likely hoping for a similar 'sleeper hit' success for Snow White, especially as questions continue to arise about the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has grossed $400.8 million globally after six weekends.

IGN's review of Snow White awarded it a 7/10, praising it for being a meaningful adaptation rather than a mere imitation of the original.
