The Witcher 4 was first unveiled during the Game Awards in December 2024, accompanied by a trailer showcasing the new protagonist, Ciri. This announcement sparked widespread discussion within the gaming community, especially since Geralt had been the face of the series for the past three games.

Following the reveal, VGC conducted an interview with The Witcher 4 Narrative Director Phillipp Weber, who addressed the fan reactions to Ciri taking the lead role. Weber acknowledged the attachment fans have to Geralt, stating, "The best thing that we can do, and I think this is really our goal, is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it because this decision to have Ciri as a protagonist wasn’t made yesterday, we started making this a very long time ago."

The Witcher 4 Executive Producer, Małgorzata Mitręga, expressed gratitude towards the fans who supported the decision to make Ciri the lead character. "Everyone has the right to have an opinion, and we do believe it comes from the passion for our games and I think the best answer for that will be the game itself when the game is released," he said.

According to the developers, The Witcher 4 is poised to be the most ambitious installment in the series, introducing new regions and monsters. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, though a specific release date has yet to be announced.
