Detailed Guide to Bow and Arrows in Minecraft

by Sophia Mar 18,2025

Minecraft's cubic world, while captivating, presents dangers: neutral mobs, monsters, and—in certain modes—other players. Self-defense relies on crafted shields and weapons. This guide focuses on creating bows and arrows in Minecraft; sword crafting is covered elsewhere. A bow without arrows is purely decorative.

What is a Bow in Minecraft?

A Minecraft bow is a ranged weapon, offering a degree of safety against enemies. However, this advantage isn't universal; the Warden, for instance, possesses ranged attacks requiring strategic combat. Skeletons, Strays, and Illusioners also wield bows, with Skeletons posing a significant early-game threat.

How to Make a Bow in Minecraft

Crafting a bow requires:

  • 3 Strings
  • 3 Sticks

Combine these at a crafting table as shown:

Alternatively, combine two damaged bows to create a repaired one with durability exceeding the sum of the originals by 5%.

Apprentice-level Fletchers sell bows for 2 emeralds; Experts offer enchanted bows at a higher cost (7-21 emeralds).

Defeating Skeletons or Strays yields a bow with an 8.5% drop rate (increased to 11.5% with a Looting enchantment on your sword).

Bow as a Crafting Ingredient

Bows are also needed to craft Dispensers, requiring:

  • 1 Bow
  • 7 Cobblestones
  • 1 Redstone Dust

Arrange them as shown:

Arrows in Minecraft

Arrows are essential bow ammunition. Crafting them requires:

  • 1 Flint
  • 1 Stick
  • 1 Feather

This yields 4 arrows. Skeletons and Strays also drop arrows (1-2), sometimes with a Slowness effect. Fletchers sell arrows (16 for 1 emerald), potentially enchanted at higher levels. Arrows can also be found in chests within Jungle Temples and Bastion Remnants, and as rewards for defending villages ("Hero of the Village" buff). Arrows stuck in blocks can be collected, except those fired by Skeletons, Illusioners, or bows with the Infinity enchantment (in Creative mode, arrows disappear).

Using a Bow in Minecraft

Equip the bow; arrows must only be in your inventory. Draw the bowstring (right-click) and release to fire. Draw time affects damage (fully drawn: 6 damage; longer hold: up to 11 damage). Arrow flight distance depends on draw strength and angle; maximum distance (≈120 blocks) is achieved with a full draw at a 45-degree upward angle. Arrows travel slower underwater and in lava.

Potions can enhance arrows. Combine 8 arrows with a Lingering Potion (as shown below) to create arrows with potion effects (⅛ the potion's duration). The Infinity enchantment doesn't provide unlimited ammo for these.

Java Edition also features Spectral Arrows (created with a regular arrow and 4 Glowstone Dust), illuminating impact areas.

This guide covers bow and arrow crafting, acquisition, and usage in Minecraft. Ensure your bow has full durability and sufficient ammo for effective hunting and self-defense.
