"Debating Ilora's Fate in Avowed: To Free or Not?"

by Adam Mar 28,2025

At the outset of Avowed, players face a pivotal decision regarding Ilora, a mysterious prisoner at Fort Northreach. Your choice—to free her or leave her—impacts your journey, particularly as you aim to use her boat to reach Paradis. Here's a detailed look at whether you should free or leave Ilora in Avowed.

Should You Free or Leave Ilora?

In Avowed, the choice to free Ilora is highly recommended. Not only does it make navigating Fort Northreach easier, but it also unlocks a side quest later in the game. While role-playing games encourage you to play as you see fit, freeing Ilora aligns with a smoother and more rewarding gameplay experience.

What Happens If You Free Ilora in Avowed?

By choosing to free Ilora, you gain a valuable ally. She assists in defeating the enemies scattered throughout the island, including the formidable boss, Steadman Ralke. Given your character's initial lack of strong weapons and armor, Ilora's help significantly eases the challenge. Additionally, freeing her sets the stage for a smoother completion of the "Escape Plan" side quest later on, enhancing your overall experience.

How to Free Ilora

To liberate Ilora, you'll need the key located in the Warden’s Room. Head down the hallway, climb the crates, and jump across to the adjacent platform. From there, access the passageway just above you. Break through the boards on your right to descend into the Warden’s Room, where the key awaits beside the door. Use this key to unlock Ilora's cell, and don't forget to open the adjacent cell to claim the Deerskin Gloves inside.

What Happens If You Don’t Free Ilora in Avowed?

Opting not to free Ilora complicates your journey through Fort Northreach and the "Escape Plan" quest later in the game. Furthermore, Ilora won't remain imprisoned; you'll have to confront her in battle, making your escape even more challenging. The silver lining? You can loot her body for valuable items, though this path marks you as less benevolent.

Ultimately, freeing Ilora in Avowed offers a more streamlined and rewarding gameplay experience. It's a choice that not only aligns with a compassionate approach but also strategically benefits your adventure.
