"Cujo Gets a Modern Twist in Netflix's Upcoming Adaptation"

by Charlotte Mar 25,2025

In the ever-evolving world of Stephen King adaptations, a fresh take on the classic horror tale "Cujo" is on the horizon. Netflix has announced its plans to bring a new film version of King's chilling story to life, with Vertigo Entertainment's founder and producer Roy Lee at the helm. However, fans will need to exercise patience as this project is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members announced yet.

Originally published in 1981, "Cujo" swiftly captured the horror genre's attention, leading to a 1983 cult classic film adaptation directed by Lewis Teague and penned by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner. The plot centers around a relentless mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who finds herself and her young son trapped in a car with a dead engine. Their survival hinges on outlasting Cujo, a once-friendly dog turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat, as he menacingly circles their vehicle amidst the threat of heatstroke.

"Cujo" is just one of many Stephen King narratives that have successfully transitioned to the screen, and the recent years have seen a notable revival in King adaptations. Oz Perkins' adaptation of King's short story "The Monkey" premiered in February, and the excitement continues with upcoming releases like the Glen Powell-starring "The Running Man" and JT Mollner's take on "The Long Walk," both produced by Lee and Vertigo. Additionally, fans can look forward to the "IT" prequel series "Welcome to Derry" on HBO. The iconic "Carrie" is also set to be reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, crafted by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King enthusiasts are currently enjoying a feast of new content, and with the upcoming "Cujo" remake, the menu promises to get even richer.
