Channing Tatum’s Canceled Gambit Movie Had a '30s Screwball Romantic Comedy Vibe Set in the Superhero World

by Hunter Mar 15,2025

Lizzy Caplan, the actress slated to star opposite Channing Tatum in the cancelled Gambit movie, recently revealed the film's unique vision to Business Insider. She described the project as having "a really cool idea," a "30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world." This aligns with comments made by producer Simon Kinberg in 2018, who described the intended tone as a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," fitting with Gambit's character as a "hustler and a womanizer."

Caplan confirmed her involvement, stating that they were "gonna shoot it" and a start date had even been set. This planned production, however, ultimately fell victim to the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum’s long-awaited dream of portraying the X-Men character seemingly dashed—an experience he later described as “traumatizing.” His surprise cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine offered a brief, unexpected return to the role.

The future of Tatum's Gambit remains uncertain, though the X-Men's impending arrival in the MCU fuels speculation. Last August, Ryan Reynolds' tweet of a high-quality Deadpool & Wolverine scene reignited fan hopes, adding to the ongoing intrigue surrounding the character's potential future.
