Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Reportedly In the Works With Sarah Michelle Gellar Returning
Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao ( Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as a key element.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The franchise continued through a series of comic books following the Angel spin-off.
