Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has finally unveiled its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 is the last major update for the game. The finality of this update has spurred a significant increase in player engagement, propelling BG3 just outside Steam's top 10 most played games. Prior to the patch, the game maintained around 60,000 concurrent players, but this number has now surged to over 169,000.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to comment on the player surge post-Patch 8. He highlighted that the game's robust mod support allows the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new creative avenues.

Consequently, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other potential partners to develop a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, Patch 8 has been in the works for some time. This final update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play, and a host of other features. The developers have provided a comprehensive breakdown of the patch's contents on BG3's official website. Compared to the November 2024 post, the latest patch notes include an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that BG3 concludes on a high note.
