Avowed Has “Meaningful Roleplay” As The Choices You Make Affect Entire Game

Avowed's game director has provided a detailed preview of the intricate gameplay the game aims to deliver upon its highly anticipated launch next year, 2025.

Avowed Features Complex Gameplay and Multiple EndingsCompeting For Political Control in The Living Lands Is Exceptionally Complex

Obsidian Entertainment's forthcoming fantasy adventure title Avowed aims to provide players "moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore their inclinations," with its intricate multi-ending gameplay. In a discussion with outlet Game Developer, game director Carrie Patel noted that every decision in Avowed, significant or minor, is intended to result in a cohesive experience.

"It's about giving the player moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore their inclinations," Patel explained. "You slow down and try to appreciate each moment of your experience," she further stated, also observing that Avowed prompts players to consider questions such as "When am I excited? When am I curious? When is my attention starting to wane? What's drawing me from moment to moment?"

Patel added that the choices and consequences in Avowed "are going to depend on what you discover" as you traverse the detailed world of Eora, competing for political dominance in the area known as The Living Lands. "I've enjoyed discovering the narratives that connect these two realms," she added.

Players step into the role of an envoy from the Aedyran Empire to unravel the mysteries of a spiritual affliction, all the while advancing your political agenda. "Giving players things to explore—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay," Patel further remarked. "It's about who you want to be in this world, and how these situations allow you to express that."

On top of the intricate RPG mechanics, the game promises tactical combat that blends magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities you can delve into and the weapon loadouts you can choose give you a very different experience each time you play," Patel said.

Moreover, Patel has confirmed to IGN a large number of endings may contain "a lot of different combinations" of each. She explained, "I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them." She added, "This is an Obsidian game, so your ending truly is the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it."
