Avowed's Character Creation: A Deep Dive into Backgrounds

Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's physical appearance and select a Background, shaping their backstory and narrative before the adventure begins. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds, each providing unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. While the starting weapon differs, all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of chosen Background.

The Five Backgrounds:

• Arcane Scholar: This academic Background grants access to unique dialogue options stemming from your character's graduation from Bragganhyl Academy and subsequent involvement in imperial court archives. Expertise in the occult, legal matters, history, and poetry are hallmarks of this Background.

• Court Augur: A tragic past involving misinterpreted visions and accusations of witchcraft shapes this Background. Fleeing to Highcrown, the character becomes the emperor's personal mystic. This Background offers dialogue options reflecting spiritual insight and a connection to magic and the Gods. Ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character.

• Noble Scion: This Background portrays a character born into nobility but whose family's downfall led them to seek the emperor's favor. Loyalty to the empire is a defining trait. A perfect choice for players wanting to align themselves with the empire's interests.

• Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this Background represents a character who prefers the wilderness to courtly life. Their skills in tracking and espionage make them a valuable asset to the empire. Suitable for players who prefer a hunter-style playthrough.

• War Hero: This Background highlights a character who suppressed a Skaenite rebellion, earning a place among elite warriors. Loyalty and combat prowess are central to this Background. A strong choice for players favoring a warrior archetype.

Starting Weapons:

Each Background provides a Common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:

• Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger
• Court Augur – Common Mace
• Noble Scion – Common Sword
• Vanguard Scout – Common Axe
• War Hero – Common Spear

These starting weapons, found near a shipwreck during the "On Strange Shores" quest, are easily replaced as the game progresses. Therefore, selecting a Background should primarily be based on roleplaying preferences and narrative alignment.
