Assassin's Creed Shadows: Max Level and Rank Cap Revealed
Assassin’s Creed Shadows stands out as one of the most ambitious titles in the franchise, boasting a comprehensive progression system that complements its expansive world. Here’s a detailed look at the maximum levels and how the level cap functions within the game.
What Is the Max XP Level in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces a revamped progression system, integrating traditional XP-based leveling alongside a new mechanic called Knowledge Ranks. The XP system allows players to unlock higher-tier weapons, armor, and gear, enhancing the base stats of protagonists Naoe and Yasuke.
While reaching Level 35 is sufficient to explore all Japanese provinces on the map, the XP grind extends beyond this point. Initially, it was thought that the level cap would be 40, as per Ubisoft’s pre-launch insights. However, players can actually progress up to Level 60. It’s anticipated that this cap might increase further with the upcoming Claws of Awaji expansion.
What Is the Max Knowledge Rank in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the Knowledge Rank system marks a significant evolution in the franchise’s progression model, operating independently of the XP system. Players earn Knowledge Points through various open-world activities focused on mindfulness and training. These points help progress through the Knowledge Ranks, unlocking new skills for Naoe and Yasuke.
To access all unlockable skills, players must reach Knowledge Rank 6. However, this isn’t the end of the road. After reaching this rank, a new Knowledge tree becomes available, offering additional passive skills to tailor your build to your preferred play style.

Is There a Cap for Mastery in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
Mastery represents the third pillar of progression in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, functioning as skill points to unlock abilities within the Mastery trees. Each protagonist has six Mastery trees, and the cost in Mastery Points varies among skills.
With numerous ways to earn Mastery Points through diverse activities, players have ample opportunities to gather what’s needed. Although theoretically, there could be a limit to Mastery Points, reaching it would require extensive engagement. The Claws of Awaji expansion is expected to introduce new methods for earning Mastery in 2025.
Does Assassin’s Creed Shadows Have Level Scaling?
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, each province in Japan has an associated level, with Kii starting at the highest requirement of Level 35. As players advance their XP level, some regions’ difficulty scales to match.
However, there’s a ceiling to this scaling from Level 40 onwards. From Level 42, the recommended level for each province remains two levels below your current XP level. This ensures a consistent challenge and maintains combat engagement in the late game, rewarding dedicated players.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available now on PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
